Our Sustainable Practices

Skye Children’s Co-Operative is dedicated to caring for the environment and supports children to become environmentally responsible. We have a passionate Sustainability officer who oversees this area.

Chickens

We have 5 resident hens which provide the centre with a not only eggs but a wealth of learning.

Our chickens, Henny, Penny, Benny, Jenny and Kenny allow the children the opportunity to observe, interact and learn about animals. It is a valuable part of a child’s education and care experience, enriching their learning about nature, ecology and relationships.

They also help with our sustainable practices, they provide eggs for the centres kitchen and the kitchen scraps, inclusive of their own shells, provide meals for the chickens.

We even use their old bedding as a nutrient rich mulch on our vegetable and garden beds!

Worm Garden

Worms will eat up to 3-4kg of our kitchen, staff tearoom, office paper waste and even dryer lint every week, then turn it into worm castings (rich plant food) and worm tea (liquid fertilizer) that can be used to improve the health of our garden.

Recycled materials

We use them in create, construction, art, and sensory play, these can be from packing materials, materials donated by families and the community and well as purchase from Reverse Art Truck.

Recycled water

We have a water tank that collects rainwater of which is used by children in their play- such as in dramatic, imaginary and or sensory play. Children also recycle their water from their water bottles at the end of the day, by watering the plants in their outdoor spaces.

Our cleaning

We use microfibre cloths and biodegradable sponges, we only use our dryer sparingly.

We have our donation collection points for our community to utilise including plastic cards, bread tags, textas and batteries.

We encourage the use of cloth nappies and if parents choose to provide cloth nappies, we train our staff on correct fit and care.
