Our Place
Skye Children's Cooperative provides personalised care and education with three age-specific rooms. Their tailored approach promotes socialisation and tailored guidance, empowering children to thrive and reach their potential.
Each of the three rooms is named after a native animals from our local Nature Conservation Reserve Gresswell Forest which is also the location of our Bush Kinder and Bush Toddler program.
At our facility, we believe that it's important to instill a sense of guardianship and respect for nature in our young learners. To encourage this connection we've named each of our three rooms after native animals from the Gresswell Reserve, a local conservation area that is also home to our bush kinder and bush toddler programs.
We recognize the importance of incorporating Aboriginal perspectives into our approach. We have consulted with local elders and community members to ensure that our naming choices reflect the cultural significance of these animals to the Wurundjeri people, who are the traditional owners of this land. By doing so, we hope to deepen our children's understanding and appreciation of the natural world, while also fostering a sense of respect for the cultural heritage of our community.
The first room, named the Sugar Glider Room (0-2 years), is inspired by the playful and social nature of these adorable, gliding marsupials. Sugar gliders have played an important role in Wurundjeri culture and traditions for thousands of years. We have up to 11 children per day in our Swift Parrot Room.
The second room, named the Swift Parrot Room (2-3 years), is inspired by the vibrant, migratory bird that visits the reserve every year. Swift parrots have long been associated with the arrival of spring and the renewal of the natural world in Wurundjeri culture. We have up to 11 children per day in our Sugar Glider Room
The third room, named the Eastern Grey Kangaroo Room (both our 3 and 4 year old programs), is inspired by the iconic marsupial that can be seen hopping around the reserve. Eastern grey kangaroos are an important symbol of strength and agility in Wurundjeri culture, and we hope that the children in this room will be inspired by these qualities as they transition from our service into school-aged children, we believe that these experiences will stay with them and help shape their perspective on the world around them. We have up to 22 children per day in our Eastern Grey Kangaroo Room.
Through play, exploration, and learning in these named rooms, we aim to encourage our young learners to develop a lifelong love and respect for the environment and the indigenous heritage of our community.
Our Rooms
-
Sugar Gliders
Sugar Gliders are for our youngest children aged 6 weeks to 2 years.
-
Swift Parrots
Swift Parrots are our pre-kindergarten group aged 2 to 3 years.
-
Eastern Grey Kangaroos 3's
Our Eastern Grey Kangaroos 3 (EGK3) is our funded 3-year-old program, sharing a room with the 4-year-olds. This setup enables natural scaffolding, as the younger children learn and grow by observing and interacting with their older peers.
-
Eastern Grey Kangaroos 4s
Our Eastern Grey Kangaroos 4 (EGK4) is our funded 4-year-old program. In this mixed-age setting, the 4-year-olds take on leadership roles, helping to guide and support the younger children. This fosters responsibility, empathy, and confidence as they mentor their younger peers.
Our learning environment also includes the nature reserve where we run our bush kinder and bush Toddler program, and the local community as active citizens within our Out and About program.
